Volvo Penta IPS500 Pod Drive System with Twin D6 Engines, 500 HP
The Volvo Penta IPS500 is a 500 HP-class pod-drive package powered by twin D6 marine diesels, each a 5.5-liter six-cylinder rated at 370 HP (272 kW) at 3500 RPM. It is designed for express cruisers, sport yachts and mid-size vessels.
Steerable pods with forward-facing, counter-rotating propellers support joystick docking in tight marinas. Each D6 is turbocharged and supercharged with a charge-air cooler and uses common-rail injection, with heat exchanger cooling. The exhaust-through-pod layout, rubber isolation mounts and soft engine suspension reduce vibration and cabin noise.
Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) unifies propulsion, steering and helm electronics, with Joystick Docking, Dynamic Positioning, Glass Cockpit compatibility and a redundant safety architecture. Reliability depends on correct installation, vessel matching and scheduled service. Emissions compliance covers EPA Tier 3, EU RCD Stage II and IMO NOx Tier II.
