Volvo Penta IPS450 Pod Drive System with Twin D6 Engines, 450 HP
The Volvo Penta IPS450 is a 450 HP-class pod-drive package powered by twin D6 marine diesels, each a 5.5-liter six-cylinder rated at 330 HP (243 kW) at 3500 RPM. Its steerable pods carry forward-facing, counter-rotating propellers.
Each D6 uses high-pressure common-rail injection and a turbocharger with charge-air cooler, with heat exchanger cooling and fuel consumption of 235 g/kWh. Exhaust passes through the pods, and soft engine mounts with rubber isolation reduce vibration and noise. The package is aimed at mid-size yachts.
Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) links the engines, pods, steering and helm electronics, enabling Joystick Docking, the Dynamic Positioning System, cruise control and Glass Cockpit compatibility within a redundant safety architecture. Emissions compliance covers EPA Tier 3, EU RCD Stage II and IMO NOx Tier II.
